WHS Counseling Department Mission Statement
The school counseling program is an integral part of the total educational process. The mission is to provide a comprehensive, developmental school counseling program that addresses the academic, career, and social-emotional development of all students. The school counselor will assist all students in acquiring the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to become effective students, responsible citizens, productive workers and lifelong learners. The program’s ultimate goal is for all students to graduate with the competencies necessary to make self-directed, realistic and responsible decisions and to be a positive contributor to society.
Meet the Counselor
My name is JoAnn McCollum. This is my first year at Western High School and I am very excited to be here! I retired from Missouri last year after working all of my 32 year career for the Hannibal School District. I was a teacher, coach, and school counselor. I have 24 years of experience as a high school counselor and was the director of the high school counseling office for 15 years. My husband, Dave, and I have two kids. Our son is 24 and our daughter is 22. We also have two dogs that are very spoiled.
